Meet the team: Emely Wiegand – A quantum physicist driven by AI innovation

We are excited to welcome Dr. Emely Wiegand to Algorithma, where she joins us as a key member of our AI development team. Emely brings a rich and diverse background, having earned her PhD in theoretical quantum physics, where she honed her skills in complex problem-solving and abstract thinking. Her journey from academia to industry was driven by a growing passion for artificial intelligence—a field she discovered she was most enthusiastic about after transitioning to industry roles focused on AI-related projects.

Emely’s interest in AI was initially sparked by its portrayal in science fiction, which captured her imagination with its potential. As she advanced in her studies and career, she watched AI evolve from a concept in fiction to a powerful, practical tool that’s deeply integrated into scientific research, industry, and everyday life. This transformation, blending theoretical knowledge with real-world applications, resonated deeply with her passion for understanding complex ideas and working with technologies that push the boundaries of progress.

Among her many achievements, Emely is particularly proud of earning her PhD, which allowed her to work on a range of exciting projects, including research on the interaction between superconducting qubits and microwaves—a technology critical for building quantum computers. Her decision to transition from academia to industry was driven by her eagerness to apply her skills in new, impactful ways, and she is now looking forward to contributing to the innovative projects at Algorithma.

In a field as dynamic as AI, Emely stays curious and engaged by following the latest developments through various apps, websites, and social media channels. Discussions with friends and colleagues also play a key role in keeping her informed and inspired. For Emely, continuous learning is not just a necessity but an enjoyable part of her daily routine, especially given the constant presence of AI in our lives.

Emely’s work aligns perfectly with Algorithma’s values, particularly our commitment to responsible AI development. While many are apprehensive about AI, Emely sees it as a powerful tool with the potential to bring about significant positive change when used responsibly. She is dedicated to contributing to this progress by working on solutions that align with our mission to build a better, more efficient world.

Outside of work, Emely’s creative side shines through. Those who knew her as a child might have expected her to become an artist, and she continues to enjoy creative activities like drawing, painting, and crocheting. She also sings in a choir and loves playing video games.

Looking ahead, Emely is eager to be part of the positive impact AI can have on society. At Algorithma, she sees the opportunity to leverage her academic background while expanding her expertise, contributing to projects that truly make a difference. We are thrilled to have her on board and look forward to the contributions she will make as we continue to shape a better future through responsible AI innovation.
